There are many capable and investable businessmen and women in Ghana who, when given the right incentives, can become the backbone and foundation of the economic growth we seek as a country. What the President and the National Democratic Congress should do, instead of flying to Europe in search of investors who will eventually take the lion’s share of profits back to their home countries, is focus on supporting local entrepreneurs.

*Give local entrepreneurs half the incentives that’s given to foreigners and they’re sure to perform*

*Ibrahim Mahama has shown that, with the right encouragement and local support, Ghanaians can rise to the challenge and deliver. As for foreign investors, we do not need to chase them. What the country as a whole must do is clean up the system and get rid of the bad image associated with us.*

We need to fix the justice system and address the visible and unpleasant stench of poverty in society. We must control corruption and give real meaning to probity and accountability. If outsiders know that the justice system truly works in Ghana, if they know we can keep the lights on consistently, and if they know they will not have to pay bribes to access essential services, investors will naturally be attracted to the country.

*Basically, if we begin to uphold true discipline and good governance, investors will pay to come and join us. We do not need to go looking for them. If we get our act together, they will come.*

Remember, Kwame Nkrumah did not go around looking for investors. He built the Ghana International Trade Fair Centre and invited both foreign and local businesses to showcase their products. That is how it should be done.
